DESCRIPTION

Tribulus terrestris L. is a flowering plant of the zygophyllaceae family. It is also known as hard thorns, goat head, puncture vine, caltrop, yellow vine, Gokhshuka , Gokhru etc. It is a hairy shrub that grows particularly well in the Mediterranean. It grows up to 60cm high and has unequal leaves and small hard fruits.

The fruits and roots of this plant have been used in folk medicine in China, India, Pakistan, and Sudan for generations. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to tonify the kidneys and to improve eyesight. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, it is used for infertility and erectile dysfunction.[4] . It is a common supplement for its libido enhancing properties and supposed testosterone boosting properties.

It is small prostrate, 10-60 cm height, hirsute or silky hairy shrub. Leaves are opposite, often unequal, paripinnate; pinnae from five to eight pairs, elliptical or oblong lanceolate. Flowers are  yellow in color. Fruits and roots are mainly used as a folk medicine for the treatment of various ailments. Root occurs in pieces, 7-18 cm long and 0.3-0.7 cm in diameter, cylindrical, fibrous, frequently branched, bearing a number of small rootlets, tough, woody, yellow to light brown in color, surface rough due to the presence of small nodules; fracture fibrous; odor aromatic; taste sweetish astringent.

Fruits are faint greenish yellow with spines. They are globose, consisting of five, nearly glabrous, muriculate, wedge-shaped, woody cocci, each with two pairs of hard sharp spines, one pair longer than the other. Odor of fruits is faintly aromatic and taste is slightly acrid.

RESEARCH:

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is the most commonly used anticancer and immunosuppressant drug, which causes several toxic effects, especially on the reproductive system. Patients who need to use CP therapy exhibit reduced fertility or infertility, which impacts both physically and emotionally on the decision to use this drug, especially among young men. This study hypothesized that the treatment with TT dry extract would protect the male reproductive system against CP toxicity. Mice received dry extract of TT (11 mg/kg) or vehicle by gavage for 14 days. Saline or CP was injected intraperitoneally at a single dose (100 mg/kg) on the 14th day. The dry extract of TT was evaluated by HPLC analysis and demonstrated the presence of protodioscin (1.48%, w/w). CP exposure increased lipid peroxidation, reactive species, and protein carbonylation and altered antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx, GST, and GR). Moreover, acute exposure to CP caused a reduction on 17 β-HSD activity, which may be related to the reduction in serum testosterone levels, histopathological changes observed in the testes, and the quality of the semen. Hence,  the study highlighted the role of TT dry extract to ameliorate alterations induced by CP administration in mice testes.

This resreach involved the study of the inhibitory effect of saponins from Tribulus terrestris (STT) on Bcap37 breast cancer cell line which  were determined by cell growth curve, MTT assay, protein content assay and morphological observation. The results reported that STT had potent inhibitory effect on Bcap-37 cell line in a concentration-dependent manner. Bcap-37 cell exhibited morphological alteration, cells got round and shrunk, nuclei contracted after treating with STT.

The aim of the this study was to investigate the anticancer activity of Tribulus terrestris Linn (TT) in liver cancer cells. The antitumor activity of aqueous TT extract was analyzed by testing the cytotoxicity and the effect on clonogenecity in HepG2 cells. Apoptosis and cell cycle arrest induced by TT were dissected by flow cytometry and its inhibitory effect on NF-κB activity was determined by analyzing the expression levels of NF-κB/IκB subunit proteins. The suppression of NF-κB-regulated gene expression by TT was assessed by RT-PCR. TT extract repressed clonogenecity and proliferation, induced apoptosis, and enhanced accumulation in the G0/G1 phase of liver cancer cells. It also turned out that TT extract inhibited NF-κB-dependent reporter gene expression and NF-κB subunit p50 expression, while it enhanced the cellular level of IκBα by inhibiting the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα. In addition, IKK activity was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, TT extract suppressed the transcription of genes associated with cell cycle regulation, anti-apoptosis, and invasion. This data shows that TT extract blocks proliferation and induces apoptosis in human liver cancer cells through the inhibition of NF-κB signaling. Thus, aqueous TT extract can be used as an anticancer drug for hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Taking tribulus during pregnancy is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Animal research suggests that tribulus might harm fetal development.

Prostate problems or prostate cancer: tribulus might make prostate conditions such as benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) or prostate cancer worse. Developing research suggests that tribulus can increase prostate weight.

Diabetes. Tribulus might decrease blood sugar levels. Dose of diabetes medications might need to be adjusted if one is consuming tribulus

Surgery: Tribulus might affect blood sugar levels. This might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Hence it is recommended to stop using tribulus at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

INTERACTIONS WITH MEDICATIONS:

Antidiabetes drugs: Tribulus might decrease blood sugar. Diabetes medications are also used to lower blood sugar. Taking tribulus along with diabetes medications might cause hypoglycemia. Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBetaGlynase PresTabMicronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.

Medications for high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors):

Tribulus seems to lower blood pressure. Taking tribulus along with medications for high blood pressure might cause your blood pressure to go too low.
